Philippe Widling is a nature photographer based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His photographs of Calgary, Alberta, and the Rocky Mountains have been published in books, magazines, newspapers, calendars, postcards, and web pages around the world.

Philippe was born in France and emigrated to Calgary in 1988 with his wife and a young child. He discovered his passion for photography in his teenage years with his father's Olympus® OM2 film camera.
The Olympus® OM2 and the Zuiko 35mm f1.8 lens were an excellent pair for beautiful landscape photos. Philippe documented two trips to the southwest of the United States, and an off-road rally across Morocco, with the Olympus.

Nowadays Philippe shoots with a Nikon® digital camera. He can often be found early in the morning, waiting for the sun to rise, somewhere in the Canadian Rockies, in Banff National Park, or in Kananaskis.

Philippe believes that photography is about capturing light. Objects and landscapes are visible to our eyes because they reflect light, either the sun or moon light, or an artificial light. Capturing the best light requires strong dedication from the photographer. He or she must be on location very early, or very late in the day. Philippe does not hesitate to go out to the mountains, set up, and wait for sunrise, even in the winter when the temperature drops down well below freezing.

Philippe's photos are taken on a Manfrotto® tripod and ball-head. Because of the low light condition in which he makes his images, Philippe uses long exposures to record the scenes he photographs. The tripod, though heavy and cumbersome, mostly during long hikes, is the only way to obtain the stability necessary for crisp images.

Philippe photographs nature, landscapes, and wildlife, mostly around Calgary, the province of Alberta, Kananaskis, and the Canadian Rockies in Banff National Park and Jasper National Park. He has also photographed the west coast of Canada's British Columbia, the Sunshine Coast of B.C., the islands of Gozo and Malta in the Mediterranean, the southwest of the United States, etc.
Philippe always has a number of travel plans to exotic destinations that will provide him with exciting photo opportunities. Return to the site often to see the latest images. Philippe updates his website once or twice a month with his latest photos.

Philippe loves hiking and camping, and he finds great satisfaction in being in nature, chasing wildlife, and making photos and images of the beautiful region he lives in.
When Philippe is not out photographing he can be found at the local airport. He holds a commercial pilot licence and he flies aerobatics regularly in his Bellanca Super Decathlon.
